We said "Never again." Now it's time to show that we mean it. Dear ColorOfChange.org member, Just before Thanksgiving, Republican leadership in the House of Representatives rammed through their plan to reduce the deficit. Their approach? Have the poor pay for it. If the Senate goes along with their cuts, 300,000 people will be dropped from food stamps, 330,000 children will be dropped from child care, and $8 billion will be slashed from student loans [1]. To top it off, in the next few weeks they're planning to pass another round of tax cuts that benefit the wealthiest Americans [2]. Coming out of Katrina, we said "Never again"--that we wouldn't watch while our folks got left behind. Well, "again" is happening now. Together with KatrinaAction.org, we're calling on our representatives to take a stand. Please join us, and then ask your friends and family to do the same. http://colorofchange.org/protectourfolks.html We expect our representatives to lead and are letting them know that we will hold them accountable. We need them to do more than vote right--we need them to fight and stop the attack on the poor from succeeding. What we're seeing is a clear attempt to gut the social safety-net that tens of millions of people rely on for survival. It's part of a sink-or-swim philosophy which is morally bankrupt, out of touch with the values of the majority of Americans, and destructive for communities all across the country. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita showed us what happens when the safety-net is eroded, making it even more shameful that any legislator would try to go down this path. The Republican leadership will only get away with this if the majority of America stays silent, and that's what they're counting on. We're determined to do everything we can to prove them wrong, but in order to make a difference, we all need to take a stand. Please join us and ask everyone you know to do the same. A lot is at stake. http://colorofchange.org/protectourfolks.html Thanks and Peace, -- James Rucker & Van Jones References: [1] Center On Budget And Policy Priorities [2] New York Times: Republicans Are Deeply Split Over How to
