Dear Republican Leaders,
I was shocked when I heard Rush Limbaugh say that President Obama's economic agenda amounts to "forced reparations." This kind of rhetoric attempts to divide Americans and stoke racial fear and paranoia by tapping into unspoken fears and assumptions about Black Americans. It also insults and demeans those of us who are Black Americans by suggesting that our highest priorities are reparations and welfare.
In recent months, one prominent Republican after another has recognized Limbaugh as a fellow national leader, and avoided disagreeing with anything he says. I want to know: do leading Republicans really agree with what Rush just said? Is this kind of racial fear-mongering a welcome part of the Republican party?
I want to know where you stand. Are you going to defend Rush Limbaugh's divisive, hurtful statements? Or will you publicly denounce his race-baiting and send the message that language like this is not what the Republican Party should stand for?
Sincerely,
[Your name]
