Extend Unemployment Assistance for Katrina Survivors

Starting March 4th, 140,000 Gulf Coast workers unemployed because of Hurricane Katrina will reach the end of their unemployment payments unless the House of Representatives acts right away to extend them. The Senate has already passed a bill to do just that, but it won't go into effect unless the House also approves the bill.

Thousands of Katrina survivors are still struggling to make ends meet. It would be shameful to let them be cut off from what may be their only support.

Starting March 4th, 140,000 Gulf Coast workers unemployed because of Hurricane Katrina will reach the end of their jobless benefits unless the House of Representatives acts right away to extend their assistance.

I urge you to request that S.1777 be immediately moved through committee and scheduled for a vote. The bill passed the Senate unanimously on February 15th and would provide 13 weeks of additional jobless benefits. A similar measure (H.R. 4438) was already adopted with broad bi-partisan support by the House FEMA committee in December. With the March 4th deadline just days away, now is the time for the House of Representatives to follow the lead of the Senate and ensure that the proud families of the Gulf Coast are not again abandoned by their government, and that they have the resources necessary to rebuild their lives and their communities.
